The Miami Hurricanes handled business in decisive fashion on Saturday, defeating Bethune Cookman 45-3 at Hard Rock Stadium. The Hurricanes controlled the contest from start to finish, improving their early-season rhythm while giving young players valuable snaps in the second half.
Quarterback Carson Beck set the tone with an efficient outing, distributing the ball across multiple targets and keeping the offense on schedule. Beck led several scoring drives before giving way to the backups, showcasing the poise and accuracy that Miami hopes will carry over into conference play.
Wide receiver CJ Daniels provided some of the game’s most memorable highlights, including a difficult sideline grab that energized the crowd. Daniels finished with multiple receptions that moved the chains and underscored his role as a reliable playmaker in Miami’s passing attack.
Freshman Malachi Toney also made his presence felt. The young receiver demonstrated speed and shiftiness in space, turning routine plays into significant gains. His contributions added depth to an offense that already featured established weapons.
Defensively, Miami limited Bethune Cookman to just three points, consistently winning the battle at the line of scrimmage and closing down opportunities in the secondary. The Hurricanes’ front applied steady pressure, while the defensive backs prevented explosive plays.
Head coach Mario Cristobal said the performance was less about the lopsided score and more about continuing to build depth and consistency. With tougher tests looming on the schedule, Miami’s ability to establish rhythm early and rotate personnel could prove valuable in the weeks ahead.
The Hurricanes return to action next week vs. No. 18 South Florida as they continue non-conference play before turning their attention to the ACC schedule.
Offensive Mastery and Record-Breaking Accuracy
Quarterback Carson Beck was near flawless, completing 22 of 24 passes for 267 yards and two touchdown passes—one from 40 yards and another from 5 yards—both caught by CJ Daniels. Notably, Beck set a new school record by completing his first 15 passes, eclipsing Vinny Testaverde’s 1986 mark of 14.
Receiving Corps in Sync
Malachi Toney, the explosive freshman, led the receiving corps with 6 receptions for 80 yards, showcasing his knack for turning routine throws into chunk gains.
CJ Daniels contributed 5 catches for 73 yards, including both of Beck’s touchdown strikes, underscoring his reliability in the red zone.
Ground Game and Depth on Display
The Hurricanes posted 199 rushing yards, led by Mark Fletcher Jr. (11 carries, 86 yards, 2 touchdowns). Contributions also came from CharMar Brown, Marty Brown, and Girard Pringle Jr., with Pringle electrifying the stadium with a 30-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Defense and Game Control
Miami’s defense was equally impressive, holding BCU to just 191 total yards and 3.8 yards per play, while generating 10 tackles for loss, highlighted by safety Keionte Scott (3 TFLs) and defensive end Rueben Bain (1 sack, 1 forced fumble). The Canes controlled the game script, scoring on all five of their drives with the starters and opening the scoring on each of their first five possessions.
