TALLAHASSEE – Carson Beck threw for 241 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Miami Hurricanes knocked off the Florida State Seminoles 28-22 at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee.
The win improved the Hurricanes to 5-0 as the Canes jumped to No. 2 in the most recent AP Poll while FSU dropped its second straight game and fell to No. 25 in the AP Poll.
Miami dominated the first three quarters and led 28-3 going into the fourth before taking its foot off the gas as the Noles made a late rally against the Hurricanes who were playing prevent defense the entire fourth quarter.
The Noles jumped out 3-0 after their first drive, but from that point on, the Canes dominated taking a 14-3 lead following an interception by freshman Bryce Fitzgerald followed by a flea flicker touchdown pass from Beck to Malachi Toney for 44 yards.
The Canes blew the game open in the 3rd quarter on back-to-back lengthy drives capped by a 40-yard touchdown pass from Beck to Toney where Toney juked out the entire FSU defense. Then Beck hit CJ Daniels for a 24-yard touchdown pass on a short screen that Daniels took to the house.
Toney had 7 catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns. CJ Daniels had 5 catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, the Hurricanes made FSU QB Thomas Castellanos run for his life as the Canes limited FSU to less than 230 yards through 3 quarters and only 3 points before the Noles offense got going against a prevent defense.
The Miami offense also shut down and went into a very conversative mode after dominating the Noles which allowed FSU to cut into the lead.
Castellanos finished 25 for 45 for 272 yards and two touchdowns, but he threw two costly interceptions. The Canes also forced fumble winning the turnover battle 3-0.
Miami has a bye week before returning to play 4-1 Louisville at home on Friday, Oct. 17th at 7pm. FSU will host Pittsburgh Saturday.
